If you are a reader, though, you’re undoubtedly familiar with Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, a work of historical fiction set in the Gothic Era of Paris. Tourists are still not allowed inside, but the cathedral is easy to marvel at from its courtyard.
